Spot the Onboarding Problems

Articulate Storyline 360 · Interactive Exploration / Onboarding Scenario

E-Learning Heroes Challenge

A flashlight-style onboarding interaction where learners explore a dark workspace, uncover four onboarding problems, and track their progress as each clue is found.

  • Articulate Storyline 360

Project overview

Learners drag a flashlight across a dark workspace and find four onboarding breakdowns. A counter shows how many have been found, and the interaction completes once all four are located.

Built as a response to an E-Learning Heroes community challenge and customized as a portfolio project.

Audience

Managers and HR staff responsible for onboarding new employees.

Learning need

Onboarding problems are easier to fix than to notice. Listing them teaches recognition far less effectively than asking someone to find them.

Instructional design rationale

The navigation is exploratory rather than linear. Learners decide where to look, which mirrors the act of noticing a problem instead of being handed one.

Visited states prevent the same clue from being counted twice, a counter reports progress, and conditional triggers control when the interaction is complete.

Design decisions

Exploratory navigation instead of a linear sequence
The objective is noticing problems, which requires searching rather than following a set order.
Visited states used to track discovery
A clue already found should not be counted again, and the visual change confirms the learner's progress.
Counter and conditional completion
Learners can see how much is left without being shown where to look next.

What this project demonstrates

  • Draggable and hotspot interaction development
  • State, variable, and trigger logic in Storyline 360
  • Progress tracking through counter and conditional completion
  • Accessibility-conscious development practice
